Welcome!

Welcome to the Department of English at New Mexico State University! We are a vibrant community of readers, writers, thinkers, and makers committed to promoting broad literacies across the diverse cultures of New Mexico—and beyond. The Department of English provides specialized undergraduate study in Creative Writing, Literature, and Rhetoric. We also have graduate programs including the MA in English, with a range of different emphases to choose from, a PhD in Rhetoric and Professional Communication; and a new online MA in Technical and Professional Communication. Our award-winning faculty are dedicated to maintaining a friendly and stimulating intellectual environment and offer small classes that encourage active and meaningful participation for all students.

In addition to our hundred or so English majors and more than fifty graduate students, the English Department serves every student in the University through the General Education Writing Program. We are home to the University Writing Center, which provides individualized in-person and online writing support to students across the University; as well as to the Creative Research Center. Our literary reading series, hosted by La Sociedad para las Artes, brings major regional, national, and international writers to Las Cruces to read with our MFA students. The English Department also publishes a national literary magazine, Puerto del Sol, dedicated to providing a forum for innovative poetry, prose, drama, criticism and artwork from emerging and established writers and artists.
