English Awards for Undergraduates:
Verna Newman Rule Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Two substanital monetary awards given each year to the junior and senior majoring in English with the highest G.P.A. Selected by the Department Head in coordination with the Undergraduate Studies Committee. No applications accepted.
Marion P. Hardman Endowed Memorial Scholarship
An award given annually to an outstanding junior or senior majoring in English. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.
Mary Powell Ambrose Endowed Memorial Scholarship
An award given annually to an outstanding junior or senior majoring in English. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.
Joseph H. Forsyth Endowed Memorial Scholarship
An award given annually to one or more juniors majoring in English who have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or better. Selected by Dr. Jane Allen and the English Department Head.
Robert A. Wichert Endowed Memorial Fund for Creative Writing
An award given annually to the student who has written the best fiction, poetry, or drama in an English class. Selected by the Creative Writing faculty.
Sutherland-McManus Awards
Two awards given annually to students who have written for and English class wither 1) the best literary or critical essay, or 2) the best work of non-fiction prose (including essays, reports, and electronic documents). Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.
Emerson Award
Recognizes outstanding writing by undergraduate students in English. One Sutherland-McManus award-winning selection will be cited as the Emerson Award recipient.
English Awards for Graduate Students:
Verna Newman Rule Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Charles M. and Pamela S. Sphar Endowed Scholarship
An award for an outstanding female English Department graduate student with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better in need of financial assistance. Financial need is established through the Financial Aid Office. Selected by the Graduate Studies Committee.
Keith Wilson/Joe Somoza Poetry Prizes
In honor of retired NMSU faculty members Joe Somoza and Keith Wilson, this award provides three different monetary awards for three outstanding graduate student poets currently enrolled in the M.A. Creative Writing Emphasis. Selected by the Creative Writing faculty.
The Frank Waters Fiction Lectureships
Awards for three outstanding graduate student fiction writers currently enrolled in the M.A. Creative Writing Emphasis. Selected by the Creative Writing faculty.
Sutherland-McManus Graduate Awards
Two awards given annually to graduate students who have written for an English class either 1) the best literary critical essay, or 2) the best work of non-fiction prose (including essays, reports, and electronic documents). Selected by the Graduate Studies Committee.
Emerson Award
Recognizes outstanding writing by graduate students in English. One Sutherland-McManus award-winning selection will be cited as the Emerson Award recipient.
