M.A. Literature Coursework

Students working toward a M.A. in Literature must complete 36 credit hours of adviser-approved coursework:

Literary Theory and Methods (3 hours). Appropriate courses include:

  • ENGL 511
  • ENGL 517
  • ENGL 526
  • ENGL 583
  • ENGL 589

Other courses with strong emphasis on literary theory may be used with adviser’s consent.

Literature Courses (18 hours). 

British literature pre-1700 or American literature pre-1900

Students must take at least one course in either British literature pre-1700 or American literature pre-1900. Appropriate courses include: 

  • ENGL 505
  • ENGL 506
  • ENGL 507
  • ENGL 508
  • ENGL 509
  • ENGL 528
  • ENGL 538
  • ENGL 592
  • ENGL 593
  • ENGL 521, 522, 523, 524, 525, or 539 (depending on the topic)

British literature after 1700/American literature after 1900

Students must take at least one course in either British literature after 1700 or American literature after 1900. Appropriate courses include:

  • ENGL 529
  • ENGL 532
  • ENGL 533
  • ENGL 540
  • ENGL 541
  • ENGL 542
  • ENGL 544
  • ENGL 545
  • ENGL 556
  • ENGL 558
  • ENGL 559
  • ENGL 521, 522, 523, 524, 525, or 569 (depending on the topic)

Literature Electives (12 hours). In addition to these “early” and “late” literature requirements (minimum of 6 hours), students will take 12 hours of literature electives. Appropriate courses include those listed above, as well as

  • ENGL 553
  • ENGL 554
  • ENGL 581
  • ENGL 583
  • ENGL 584
  • ENGL 586
  • ENGL 587
  • ENGL 588

Students must take at least one course in British literature and at least one course in American literature. Thesis hours also may be included in literature electives.

Optional Courses (9-12 hours). These courses may be taken inside or outside the department and should be selected in consultation with the adviser.

Note: Graduate Assistants must take ENGL 571: Composition Pedagogy and Practicum (3 credit hours) during their first semester as assistants. This course will count toward these 9 to 12 hours.

Optional: English 598 Master’s Essay (3 hours)

Optional: English 599 Master’s Thesis (6 hours)
