Teaching goals/philosophy: As a teacher, I hope to be an effective messenger or intermediary. My job, as I see it, is to foster students in defining and beginning to realize themselves as readers, writers, and thinkers. The students at New Mexico State University are a diverse population. I not only want to teach them the language in which the academic community communicates but ultimately I also want to facilitate students’ learning on their terms: in their own literacy and thereby understanding and questioning the language of academia. I have students from different learning environments and my goal is to allow their voices to remain strong while teaching them academic discourse.
