Who can participate in the Teacher Exchange program? Any New Mexico high school English teacher is welcome to get involved. We are especially eager to work with teachers of either seniors or juniors, though teachers of sophomores will be considered as well. How do I apply for the program? Email Jennifer Cervantes, the program coordinator, at jcervant@nmsu.edu, or call her for more information at (575) 649-0591. You can also download and submit an application (in MS Word format). Secondary educator application What sort of time commitment is involved? Participating teachers work with their partners for one semester, not one entire academic year. During the semester, you will need to attend two 2-hour meetings at NMSU, when all participants will get together for training and collaboration. Outside of these two meetings, you will also need to meet with your partner for planning a few times, whenever is convenient for both of you. In addition to planning and collaboration time, the exchange requires that each teacher observe their partner for one class period (sub pay is provided for secondary teachers), and that NMSU teachers teach in one high school classroom (with the high school teacher) roughly 5-6 times. This will vary depending on the assignment you and your partner create. How much support will I get from my partner? As this project is strictly collaborative, you will work with your partner consistently throughout the semester. Partners are introduced and begin working together at our first meeting each semester; from that point on, you will work with your partner independent of the rest of the group. You and your partner will create curriculum and writing prompts together, and discuss and respond to student writing together. Will I get paid for participating in the NMETE? Yes. You will be paid $500.00 for your time and of course the learning that takes place is invaluable. |
