Undergraduate awards

  • Dr. Larry L. Wilson Endowed Memorial Scholarship
  • Given annually to a New Mexico resident majoring in English with a minimum GPA of 3.0; preference given to returning students. Applicants must demonstrate financial need but not be eligible for financial aid. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee. Fall.

     

  • Elizabeth Jean Wichert Endowed Memorial Scholarship
  • Given annually to outstanding senior(s) majoring in English. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee. Fall.

     

  • Joseph H. Forsythe Endowed Memorial Scholarship
  • Given annually to a junior majoring in English with a minimum GPA of 3.5. Applicants must be native New Mexicans. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee. Fall.

     

  • Lucille Earnhart Roney Endowed Scholarship
  • Given annually to sophomore, junior, or senior English major(s) with an emphasis in Literature, Language, and Culture. Minimum GPA 3.0. Applicants must have attended a New Mexico high school; preference given to applicants from Doña Ana County high schools. Applicants must be US citizens. Preference given to women. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee. Fall.  

     

  • Marion P. Hardman Endowed Memorial Scholarship
  • Given annually to outstanding English major(s) who have completed at least 80 credits at NMSU by the beginning of the Fall semester. Financial need and potential for advanced work considered. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee. Fall.  

     

  • Mary Powell Ambrose Endowed Memorial Scholarship
  • Given to outstanding English major(s). Juniors and Seniors are eligible to apply. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee. Fall.  

     

  • Robert E. Wichert Endowed Memorial Awards for Critical and Creative Writing
  • Given annually to two outstanding undergraduate students: one for literary criticism or work in rhetoric, digital media, or professional communication; and one for creative writing (prose, poetry, or drama). Selected respectively by the Undergraduate Studies Committee and the Creative Writing faculty. Fall.

     

  • Sutherland-McManus Memorial English Scholarships
  • Two awards given annually to English majors who have written for an English class, within the past calendar year, either 1) the best literary critical essay, or 2) the best work of non-fiction prose (including essays, reports, and electronic documents). Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.  Fall.

     

  • Emerson Award
  • Recognizes outstanding writing by an English major. One Sutherland-McManus award-winner will be cited as the Emerson Award recipient. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee. Fall.

     

  • Vera Newman Rule Endowed Memorial Scholarship
  • Substantial monetary awards given each year to the junior and senior English majors with the highest GPA (number of credit hours completed in the current program at NMSU is used as a tie-breaker). Determined by the Department Head. No applications accepted. Fall.

     

  • Stuart C. Brown Award for Excellence in Writing
  • Given to an English major with an emphasis in Rhetoric, Digital Media, and Professional Communication. Must have taken at least one 300-level course in RDMPC. Writing sample and cover letter required (see application packet for details). Selected by the Rhetoric faculty. Spring.

     

  • Paideia Essay Contest
  • First, second, and third place monetary prizes given to the top writing samples from ENGL 111G classes. Opportunity to be published in the upcoming edition of the Paideia textbook. Selected by the Writing Program. Fall and Spring.
